日本海に面した舞鶴は東西に分かれています。東舞鶴はかつて軍港が置かれ、今も海上自衛隊が駐屯する港町です。一方の西舞鶴は田辺城の城下町です。2012年、舞鶴を想う有志たちの手で築130年の町家が生まれ変わりました。

井波の町を歩けば、どこかしこから木彫りの槌の音が聞こえてきます。江戸中期、名刹・瑞泉寺再建のために京都から派遣された彫刻師の技が、井波の職人に伝わりました。現在、人口約8000人の井波には200人以上もの彫刻師がおり、その数は全国一を誇ります。

This tradition dates back to the 18th century, when wood-carving masters arrived from Kyoto and started passing their exceptional skills to local carpenters. With a population of 8,000 in Inami, 200 are woodcarving artisans.
