井波の町を歩けば、どこかしこから木彫りの槌の音が聞こえてきます。江戸中期、名刹・瑞泉寺再建のために京都から派遣された彫刻師の技が、井波の職人に伝わりました。現在、人口約8000人の井波には200人以上もの彫刻師がおり、その数は全国一を誇ります。
