宿の名前であるSMALL TOWN HOSTELは、「小さなまちの宿」という意味です。
海に張り出した函館山に寄り添うように伝統的建造物や和洋折衷建築が今も残る旧市街地、通称「西部地区」。 その中心部から地区の端までは車で10分で行ける小さなエリアです。 人と人、人と地域、人と暮らしが近づくとまちが小さく感じられる。 SMALL TOWN HOSTELには物理的な町の小ささだけでなく、気持ちが寄り添い近づくまちの姿もイメージしています。宿内での快適な滞在はもちろん、宿の外に出てもそこに住む人々の暮らしが感じられるような小さなまちの”暮らしを見つける宿”です。 開港都市として早くから西洋文化が街並みに反映され、今も残る「函館らしい建物」をリノベーションした小さなこだわりのお店もまた少しずつ増えてきているのも見どころです。 商店主たちとの対話から、個人的オススメを聞いてみても面白い旅になると思います。

SMALL TOWN HOSTEL means “an inn in a small town.”  It is surrounded by the ocean and is situated at the foot of Hakodate-Yama. “Seibu Chiku”, the western district, offers travelers various sites to visit. Not only are there tourist attractions, but visitors can experience the local lifestyle by exploring the many traditional Japanese houses in the area.  In addition, visitors can view several Western styled houses which makes this area of Hakodate unique and special. From the center of “Seibu Chiku”, it is only a quick 10 minute drive to the spectacular ocean view. When people are close to each other, it seems as if the community itself unites.  Small Town Hostel is an “inn in a small town” which strives to provide guests with the same welcoming sense of community that permeates Hakodate.
